Is Stop Motion Too Expensive? Maybe, Maybe Not…

You are working on your next campaign for one of your products and have noticed that several competing brands are using animation. You want to take a similar approach but create something more unique. Upon researching, you come across examples of unique stop motion animation and decide to implement this style for your product promotion. However, you encounter comments suggesting that stop motion is time-consuming and expensive, leading you to question if this perception is accurate.

There is a common belief that stop motion animation is too expensive to create because it requires a significant amount of time and effort to produce even a short, one-minute animation. While this perception is partly valid, it’s essential to understand the underlying reasons. Stop motion animation is labor-intensive because most of the work is done by hand in an analog manner. Each set, character, and prop is handcrafted, making it quite different from computer-generated imagery (CGI), where everything is created digitally using specialized software. While CGI has its own complexities and skill requirements, it can be less practical and, at times, more costly than stop motion, especially when creating assets for content.

How is this possible? Let me provide an example!

Imagine you are launching a new beverage, specifically a juice packed with natural proteins and probiotics designed to boost the immune system. Sounds like a miracle drink, right? You visualize an animation where all the ingredients are featured in a playful manner to engage and inform potential customers. Then the juice bottle slides into the center of the frame, surrounded by all the beneficial ingredients. The final frame showcases a beautiful image of your product along with its ingredients.

To replicate this concept using stop motion, you only need to gather the items (the products and ingredients), set up the necessary lights, camera, and stage, and then start animating frame by frame according to your desired direction. In contrast, using CGI requires the 3D designer to model each item in a 3D environment, ensuring that everything appears realistic. They must find suitable image textures from stock resources or create them to match the look and feel of each element. Once the modeling and texturing are complete, the animation can begin, followed by rendering the final animation. The rendering process can vary in time based on the complexity of the textures. Different textures, filters, and lighting effects may be necessary to create a realistic appearance, which can slow down the rendering time, sometimes taking hours to complete.

stop motion too expensive compared to CGI

One key advantage of stop motion is that you work directly with the actual products, eliminating the need to recreate them in CGI. This approach can significantly reduce production time, allowing for more focus on creativity. The unique handcrafted style of stop motion adds a realistic and natural feel, reflecting the true essence of your brand and products. Additionally, since stop motion consists of a series of photographs, these images can be repurposed as assets for other applications.

While there are certainly advantages to CGI, it is important to recognize that stop motion can be an excellent choice for those with a limited marketing budget, especially for microcontent.
